Newbury Landscaping builds retaining walls and sleeper walls across Newbury and West Berkshire — the structures that turn sloping chalk-country gardens into flat, usable terraces. From the hillside plots at Cold Ash and Hermitage to town gardens stepping down towards the Kennet & Avon canal, holding back ground properly is a large share of what we do.

A retaining wall is a structure first and a garden feature second. Ours are designed for the load behind them, drained so winter water never builds up, and priced as a fixed written figure after a free site visit.

Ways to hold back a slope

Oak sleeper walls

New oak sleepers laid horizontally or set vertically into concrete — warm, honest and strong. Oak's density gives 20+ years in ground contact; we use new-sawn sleepers, never tar-soaked reclaimed rail sleepers, which leach creosote.

Softwood sleeper walls

UC4 pressure-treated softwood at roughly two-thirds the cost of oak — a sound choice for lower walls and raised beds.

Block & render / brick

Concrete block walls on cast footings, faced in render, brick or stone cladding — the route for taller walls and crisp modern terracing.

Terracing with steps

Most slopes want two or three low walls with steps between, not one tall one — cheaper, safer and better looking.

Drainage: the part that decides whether the wall lasts

Walls rarely fail from the weight of soil alone — they fail from water. Saturated ground behind a wall can triple the pressure on it, so every retaining wall we build gets the same hidden kit: a geotextile-wrapped gravel drainage layer behind the face, a perforated land drain at the base carrying water to a soakaway or gully, and weep holes through masonry walls as the visible tell that it's been done. Timber walls get a membrane between soil and sleepers so the timber isn't sitting in wet ground year-round.

Beyond roughly a metre of retained ground, a wall wants structural engineering input — and we'll say so at the design stage rather than build it and hope.
