The technical bit, in plain English
A 12v system steps mains power down through a transformer, so the cable running round the garden carries safe extra-low voltage. Transformer placement is the design decision people miss: it wants a dry, ventilated, accessible spot — garage wall, shed, or an IP-rated external enclosure — sized with 20–30% headroom over the connected load so fittings can be added later. Fittings are specified by IP rating for where they live: IP65 for rain-exposed wall and spike lights, IP67 for ground-recessed fittings that sit in puddles, IP68 for anything in a pond. Cable is buried in duct at depth or clipped out of harm's way, and any mains-side work is handled by a qualified electrician working to BS 7671.
