Composite boards
Wood-polymer boards from established names — Millboard, Trex, Composite Prime — in solid or capped construction. No rot, no annual oiling, consistent colour, and modern capped boards resist the fading early composites suffered.
Softwood timber
The budget route: pressure-treated boards at roughly half the material cost, but committed to annual cleaning and re-oiling, and a 10–15 year life against composite's 25+.
Grip and shade
Textured composite boards keep grip when wet — worth having on north-facing decks that stay damp, where timber turns lethal without regular treatment.

The sub-frame is the real build
Under every deck we build sits either C24 structural-grade treated timber or, increasingly, an aluminium joist system. Joists go at 300mm centres for composite — not the 400–450mm that suits timber boards — because composite spans shorter distances stiffly. The frame stands on adjustable pedestals or concrete pads clear of soggy ground, with a weed membrane below and airflow designed in: a ventilated deck dries, a sealed one rots from underneath. On Newbury's sloping gardens a deck is often the cheapest way to create a genuinely level outdoor room over a drop that would cost far more to terrace in masonry.
Aluminium sub-frames add around 15–20% but remove the last piece of rot risk entirely — worth discussing on a deck you want to outlive the mortgage.
