Newbury Landscaping installs artificial grass across Newbury and West Berkshire — and we'll start with the honest bit: it isn't for every garden. Where it earns its place is where real grass keeps losing: heavily shaded town gardens, dog-worn back lawns, play areas that turn to mud each winter, and households with zero appetite for mowing.

Fitted properly on a full sub-base, modern artificial grass looks convincing and lasts 15 years plus. Fitted on rolled soil, it ripples and fails in two. Every installation is priced in writing after a free visit.

Choosing the right grass

Pile height

30–38mm is the sweet spot for a natural lawn look — long enough to stand up, short enough not to flatten. Shorter 25mm piles suit play areas and putting-style surfaces.

Realism

Quality UK-spec turf from names like Namgrass and LuxiGraze mixes green tones with a brown thatch layer — the detail that separates convincing from carpet.

Pets

Fully permeable backing so urine drains straight through, no rubber crumb infill, and a kiln-dried silica sand dressing that keeps the pile upright and helps neutralise odour. Hose monthly in summer and it stays fresh.

Shade & borders

Artificial grass thrives exactly where real turf fails — deep shade — and pairs well with generous planted borders so the garden stays alive.

The sub-base does the work

Our build-up is the same every time: strip the existing lawn, excavate 75–100mm, lay a geotextile membrane to stop weeds and keep layers separate, compact 50–75mm of MOT Type 1, then a 20–25mm blinding layer of granite or limestone dust screeded flat as the laying course. The grass is stretched, fixed at the perimeter, seamed with proper jointing tape and dressed with silica sand. On free-draining chalk this build drains beautifully — puddling problems are rare here if the base is right.

Cheap installs skip the Type 1 layer and lay onto whacked soil. It looks identical on handover day and entirely different after the first wet winter.
