A resin driveway only performs as well as what sits underneath it, so we price the groundworks as carefully as the surface.

Resin bound and resin bonded are not the same thing
Most people use the two names interchangeably and end up comparing quotes for two different products. Resin bound is 6mm dried aggregate mixed through UV-stable polyurethane resin in a forced-action mixer, then hand-trowelled out as a single 15–18mm wearing course. Air voids run right through it, so rain drains straight down — that is what makes it permeable and SUDS-compliant.
Resin bonded is a different job: resin is squeegeed onto a solid base and dry stone broadcast over the top. The finish is rough and high-grip, but it is not permeable and uses roughly half the stone, so it costs less. It earns its place on steep ramps where grip beats drainage. If one quote sits far below the rest, check which of the two you are being sold.
What goes under a resin driveway
A new base, built from scratch
Geotextile membrane, 150mm of compacted MOT Type 1, then a 50–65mm open-graded binder course laid porous, so water leaving the resin has somewhere to go.
Overlaying an existing drive
Sound tarmac or concrete with no movement, no crazing and decent falls can be overlaid at 15mm once cleaned and primed. Concrete expansion joints have to be traced through the resin or they telegraph.
When it has to come out
Rocking flags, a cracked slab, rutted tarmac, or anything laid straight onto soil. Overlaying a failing base buys one season, then the resin splits along the same lines.
SUDS and permitted development
Front-garden hard surfacing over 5m² stays within permitted development only if it is permeable or drains to a soakaway. Resin bound on a permeable build-up qualifies; resin bonded does not.
Aggregate, colour and UV
Kiln-dried 6mm blends — golden quartz, autumn brown, silver grey, flint. Aliphatic UV-stable resin holds its colour; the cheaper aromatic resins amber within a couple of summers.
Edge restraint
Resin has to be trowelled against something: a block edge course bedded and haunched to BS 7533 practice, a brick soldier course to match the house, or 4mm aluminium edging against lawn.
If gravel suits the plot better
On period houses and paddock-edged plots, loose gravel often looks more at home and costs less than half. We build both, so we will say so.

Fifteen to twenty years, if the base is right
A properly built resin drive gives 15–20 years before it needs anything more than a clean. Weed-free is not maintenance-free: brush it, keep leaf mulch out of the voids, and jet wash at low pressure with a fan tip held well back — a turbo nozzle pulls stone out of the matrix.
When resin cracks, the resin is rarely the cause. It is base movement — a soft spot, an unbridged joint, tree roots, or an overlay that should have been a dig-out. The free-draining chalk under Newbury makes soakaways work well, but long rural drives towards Chieveley, Kintbury and Lambourn carry horsebox and tractor loads on unrestrained edges, so those get a deeper build-up and a proper kerb line.
