Turfing & New Lawns in Newbury

New-build gardens around Sandleford are the classic case: 30mm of soil raked over compacted subsoil and buried rubble, then turf on top. It looks fine in April and dies in July. We do it differently — strip what's there, decompact the ground, then build a 100–150mm rootzone of screened topsoil, graded and firmed in two directions so the finished lawn is flat, drains evenly, and roots deep enough to survive a chalk-country summer. Cultivated turf from a named UK grower such as Rolawn goes down within 24 hours of harvest and gets watered in the same day.

For most family gardens under about 100m², turf wins: it's weed-free from day one, children and dogs can be back on it in a month, and the extra cost over seed is small at that scale. Seed comes into its own on big rural lawns — 300m² and up — where the per-metre saving is real money and a September sowing gets roots established over winter for a strong spring. On shaded or awkward areas we blend approaches: shade-tolerant fescue mixes where a ryegrass turf would sulk under trees.

If the existing lawn is patchy rather than dead, say so — sometimes scarifying, aeration, topdressing and overseeding at a few pounds per metre beats a full re-lay, and we'll tell you when that's the case.
